Money managers through Nov. 28 extended their K.C. wheat net short to near 50,000 futures and options contracts, their largest since May 2019 and among their biggest-ever shorts. Grain futures sank in the week ended Nov. 28, including a 3.2% decline in CBOT March corn and a 1.8% slide in March wheat . CBOT March wheat found contract lows on Nov. 27 but touched three-week highs by Friday, presumably motivated by short covering. Funds in that week cut their net long in CBOT soybean futures and options to 67,562 contracts from 81,587 a week earlier.

USDA pegged U.S. corn yield at 174.9 bushels per acre, up from 173 last month and above nearly all estimates, which on average predicted a slight increase. It was the most bearish corn yield in a November report since 2017. That could negatively impact Brazil’s second corn production, as was the case after the 2015-16 El Nino, rerouting corn demand to the United States. USDA left Brazil’s 2023-24 soy crop unchanged at 163 million metric tons this month, but it raised the prior crop by 2 million tons to 158 million, suggesting exports are outperforming prior crop expectations. However, USDA has flashed 2.85 million tons (105 million bushels) of U.S. soybean sales so far this week, mostly to China and unknown destinations.

Rhys Darby Photo: MaxMovie sequels have a terrible reputation, despite the few standout exceptions. But follow-up seasons to television series can be a different matter, despite more than a few that have worn out their welcome. Characters are already established, the boilerplate of narrative can be scrapped and the storytelling can be made richer. The current season of “The Bear,” for instance, is an improvement on an already first-rate show. And the wickedly mischievous “Our Flag Means Death,” one of the more creatively delinquent comedies on TV, has gleefully gone off the deep end.

Core prices are forecast to have risen by a more acceptable 0.2% for a third straight month. That would take the annual rate down to 4.3%, the smallest year-on-year rise since September 2021. What makes these figures so interesting is the central bank is already in its quiet period before the Sept. 20 rate announcement, with traders overwhelmingly expecting the Fed to keep rates on hold. That updated projection is well above the central bank's 2% inflation target and above the 2.7% predicted by a Reuters poll of economists. The Federal Reserve’s survey of economic activity released Wednesday showed an economy that was expanding at a modest pace in the summer but facing the challenge of a tapped-out consumer and a slowing labor market. There is less unanimity about what the Fed will do after that, at its November meeting. Services inflation is still sticky, the economy may be growing faster than the Fed would like and the Chinese economy is in a slowdown. “Fed Governor Christopher Waller told CNBC yesterday that recent labor market data, including a decline in job openings, moderating wage increases, and slower job growth in August are encouraging,” said Jose Torres, senior economist at Interactive Brokers. Having said that, he left the door open for another rate hike because he doesn’t think one more would weaken economic growth significantly given risks remain tilted towards not doing enough.”
